Panel: Challenges in Introducing New Systems Engineering Tools
  • April 25 2024 - 1:15 am - 2:15 am

Adopting a new tool is often a major cultural change. There are often changes required to processes and roles. Sometimes a new tool forces (or is a good excuse to enforce) process standardization. Rarely is the major benefit of a new tool simply the productivity inherent in the tool itself; the tool enables new ways of working. But there are institutional and cultural barriers to any such change: existing experts may feel threatened by loss of their special knowledge, people and functions may not want to change to a common process, programs on a critical time scale may not want to take on the risk and learning curve inherent in a new tool. These challenges are all in addition to the purely execution challenges of on-boarding a new tool, migrating data, defining and training on new processes. Our panel will discuss challenges they have seen in new tool adoption and techniques to achieve success.
