Cubesats are small satellites composed of several units, where each unit could fit in the palm of your hand and its mass must be below 1.33 kg. One challenge of CubeSat is to maintain a lightweight and small volume before deployment, this is why the space industries tend to use foldable reflector dishes that are deployed once the CubeSat is deployed in space. Another challenge is designing feeder antennas that respect space specifications.
In this session, we will see how SIMULIA CST Studio Suite allows the complete optimization of the antenna system, from the isolated feeder to the complete simulation of all the systems on the satellite. Moreover, we will see how SIMULIA CST helps with modelling advanced material such as the CFRT (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Technology) in order to precisely predict the performance of the reflector on the CubeSat.
In this presentation, we introduce the concept of the Triangular Relationship between Academia, Industry, and Dassault Systèmes, the 3DEXPERIENCE company. The aim of this Programme, which is currently being applied across Northern Europe with many of our strategic customers, is to promote a triangular conversation with industrial partners and strategic universities to boost the employability of students and the competitiveness of Universities, as well as to nurture the dialogue on skills needed for a sustainable future (e.g. Simulations, 3DEXPERIENCE, collaboration, project-based learning, systems thinking, etc.).
Being at the core of Dassault Systèmes’ ecosystem building, the triangular relationships pave the way towards the opening of EDU Centres of Excellence, focused on the 3DEXPERIENCE and virtual technology to equip students and professionals with the skills needed by industry in an immersive way.

Using SIMULIA CST Studio Suite and Antenna Magus, we will design and analyze single antennas and antenna arrays. Typical design output such as return loss and far-field patterns can be easily calculated and optimized to meet the requirements. Moreover, components such as filters, diplexers, and multiplexers can be efficiently modeled and optimized using our filter synthesis tool FD3D and FEST3D, an efficient filter simulation tool. We will also learn how low- and high-frequency solvers can be efficiently coupled for modeling different components.
An antenna array allows us to achieve high gain with multiple radiating elements and a phased array in addition offers the possibility to shape and steer the beam without changing the array geometry. Traditionally such arrays have been used in defence applications, particularly for radar, but this is changing as we see increased commercial use, especially with the advent of on-the-move access to high bandwidth data. The challenge lies in achieving these radiating characteristics while keeping the undesired effects such as the mutual coupling between the elements due to their proximity to each other at a minimum. In this seminar, we will explore state-of-the-art simulation approaches for antenna array design.
