Discover how to simulate different aspects of a photomultiplier, a device used for detection in scientific experiments and in night vision goggles.
Photomultipliers are devices to amplify light or to visualize a spectrum that cannot be seen by human eyes, such as infrared. They therefore enable sight under low light conditions and are used in devices like night vision goggles. They are also used for detection in scientific experiments.
The basic elements of a photomultiplier are a photocathode, an electron multiplier and a phosphor screen. At the photocathode, light releases electrons by means of the photoelectric effect. These electrons are accelerated towards the electron multiplier, where the electron current is amplified. Finally, the amplified current strikes a phosphor screen to convert the electrons into light again.
