Learn more about lubrication.
The ongoing electrification process in the automotive industry poses new challenges to automakers and suppliers: from battery technology to passenger comfort. One of the main challenges faced is building reliable and highly efficient electric drives. Ensuring proper lubrication of critical components like bearings and gears is essential to guaranteeing a long service life for the electric drive system. On the subject of lubrication, however, more is not always better: oil-induced drag torque on the rotating components is a main contributor to efficiency losses. In order to increase the vehicle range with the same battery capacity, the oil level in the electric drive system needs to be optimized.
The solution presented takes advantage of SIMULIA XFlow’s high fidelity Lattice-Boltzmann solver, and its transient and multiphase capabilities, to assess and improve the lubrication performance of an integrated electric drive.
