Oil and gas reserves lie buried thousands of feet beneath layers of rock, and extraction requires understanding how these fluids flow through the porous reservoir rock.
Lab testing on rock samples is a slow, expensive process with poor reproducibility, forcing engineers to make decisions based on limited data. SIMULIA DigitalROCK provides a virtual lab for analyzing reservoir rock samples. The DigitalROCK computational modeling solution uses a high-resolution 3D image of a rock sample as input to determine important fluid related properties including pore size distribution, absolute permeability, relative permeability, and capillary pressures. For the oil and gas industry, these properties are of essential importance to reservoir characterization and production design. Challenges in reservoir analysis are presented, followed by a description of DigitalROCK, typical workflow, benefits, and some Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) use case examples. Other potential applications of the technology are also presented.
